The Penn & Tylers Green Residents Society (P&TGRS) was formed in the spring of 2003 from a merger of the former Penn & Tylers Green Residents Association and Penn & Tylers Green Society, both of which dated back to the 1960s. It is a body represented entirely by local people and exists to better the quality of life for all the residents of the two Chiltern villages of Penn and Tylers Green.

The Society converted to a Charitable Company during the course of 2003 and it is run by a group of up to 15 Trustees who are Directors of the Company. The Society's objectives are to promote any charitable purpose for the benefit of the inhabitants of the two villages. Among these are : to advance education; to provided facilities in the interest of social welfare for recreation and other leisure -time occupation, with the object of improving the conditions of life for the said inhabitants; to promote high standards of planning and architecture in or affecting Penn and Tylers Green; to educate and stimulate discussion on matters relating to the history, architecture, natural history and geography of the area; to secure the preservation, protection, development and improvement of historic, architectural, or public interest in the area; to secure protection, conservation and enhancement of the wildlife and countryside in or affecting the two villages.

Our locality is surrounded by an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB) and Green Belt, and parts of the two villages are in a large Joint Conservation Area, so it is hardly surprising that some of the Residents Society's objectives are concerned with conservation and wider environmental issues.

In order to fulfil its objectives, the Society owns and runs a pre-school as a non-profit-making community facility; has exclusive management rights over Common Wood ( purchased some six years ago by public subscription and a grant from the Heritage Lottery Fund, secured for the future as a public woodland through a leaseback arrangement with The Woodland Trust). The Society works closely with and is represented on the Chiltern Woodland Project.

The Society coordinates and represents views and concerns of residents and other village groups on community matters and is a Recognised Community Hub - by the two local planning authorities ( Chiltern and Wycombe District Councils), by Bucks County Council and the police - for all major development proposals and applications. The Society is represented on the local Neighbourhood Action Group (NAG) which works with the police to identify policing priorities.

The Society generates its income largely through advertisements in "Village Voice". Any surplus after taking account of expenses is disbursed to local voluntary organisations in accordance with the charitable objectives of the Society.

All residents who live in the Tylers Green Ward of Chepping Wycombe Parish Council or in Ward UA of Penn Parish Council are considered members, unless they notify the Secretary that they do not want to be. All members are entitled to attend or have their views represented at meetings of the Board of Trustees, the AGM and any Special General Meeting. They are also able to set out their views by writing to the Editor of "Village Voice ", the local magazine for Penn and Tylers Green, which is distributed bi-monthly free of charge to every home in the two villages.
