Village pre-school

Pre-schoolThe Residents Society runs the Village Pre-school on a "not-for-profit" basis. The school is open every day in term time and meets at the Methodist Church in Coppice Farm Road.

Our aim is to encourage the development of happy, confident children from 2 to 5 years who learn all the time through a mixture of creative and structured play and exciting activities.

Eligible 3 and 4 year olds are fully funded

Our setting aims to:

  • provide high quality care and education for children aged 21/2 to 5 years;
  • work in partnership with parents to help children to learn and develop;
  • add to the life and well-being of the local community; and
  • offer children and their parents a service that promotes equality and values diversity.

As a community based, voluntary managed setting, we also depend on the good will of parents and their involvement to keep going. Membership of the setting carries expectations on parents for their support and commitment.

We aim to ensure that each child:

  • is in a safe and stimulating environment;
  • is given generous care and attention, because of our ratio of qualified staff to children, as well as volunteer parent helpers;
  • has the chance to join with other children and adults to live, play, work and learn together;
  • is helped to take forward her/his learning and development by being helped to build on what she/he already knows and can do;
  • has a personal key person who makes sure each child makes satisfying progress;
  • is in a setting that sees parents as partners in helping each child to learn and develop; and
  • is in a setting in which parents help to shape the service it offers.

Village Voice

vv-cover-dec09The Residents Society owns and publishes the Village Voice magazine which is distributed to all residents in Penn and Tylers Green 6 times a year.

Village Voice is produced by a team of volunteers and is funded through advertisments. Profits are regularly distributed to charities and other good causes, and contributions from local clubs, societies and organisations are always welcome.

Planning & Conservation

The Residents Society takes a keen interest in matters of planning and conservation within the local area. A specific sub-committee has been formed to make appropriate representation to the local authority in the comparatively few cases where an application is thought to damage the wider interests of the community, bearing in mind the following aims:

1 to promote high standards of planning and architecture

2 to secure the preservation, protection, development and improvement of historic, architectural or public interest

3 to secure protection, conservation and enhancement of wildlife and the countryside

Conservation Area

Penn and Tylers Green share a single, very large and varied Conservation Area which crosses the District boundary.  The combined area covers about 85 acres with some 329 properties, 50 of which are listed.  Penn is the more rural settlement, lying both within the Chilterns Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty and the Green Belt.   A detailed account of the Conservation Area, its houses and many of its main features can be found in the book Mansions and Mudhouses, more details of which can be found here.
