Make life difficult for the distraction burglar
Last Updated on Sunday, 18 December 2011 15:41
A distraction burglary is when someone calls at a door where they think someone vulnerable may live; this may be an older person or someone with a disability. Follow these simple steps to protect yourself and your home:
Lock: Keep all doors and windows locked when not in use. Don’t leave the keys in the lock but do keep them near the door or window in case of an emergency such as a fire.
Stop: Before you answer the door, stop and think - are you expecting anyone, or has anyone sent you a letter making an appointment? Before answering the door check that the back door is locked. If possible check through the spy hole or glass panel to see if you recognise the person.
Chain: If you decide to open the door, place the door bar or chain on first.
Check: If someone looks official, question them as to whom they are, where they are from, why they are calling then ask for ID. Take the ID, close the door, then look up the organisation or company in the phone book or ring directory enquires and ask them to confirm the phone number on the card. Or set up a password scheme with anyone that visits your home.
